MKC employees and
the public will have the opportunity to donate at upcoming blood drives
co-sponsored by the MKC Community Involvement Committee and local American Red
Cross chapters. Drives will be hosted in
Moundridge, Haven, Walton, Bennington and Lindsborg.
“Donating blood is so important,” states Erin Riley MKC Community Involvement Member. “Every two seconds someone in the United States receives a blood transfusion, yet only 5% of the population donates.”
Hurricane Sandy has
caused the cancellation of nearly 100 American Red Cross blood drives and more
cancellations are expected. According to
the American Red Cross, the cancellations have resulted in a shortfall of more
than 3,200 blood and platelet donations.
The Red Cross did
move blood and blood products to those areas most likely to be affected by the
storm so that the blood needs of people in those areas could be met. However, the long-term impact of power
outages and blood drive cancellations is expected to be significant. The Red Cross is asking people in
communities not affected by the storm to make an appointment to donate blood as
soon as possible.
